Kano State House of Assembly approves 15 years for rapists, life imprisonment for kidnappers

The Kano State House of Assembly has passed into law, a bill seeking for life imprisonment for kidnappers and 15 years sentence for rapists in the state.

Hon. Yussuf Attah, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, who read the Kidnapping, Abduction and Forced Labour Amendment Bill 2016 before the Assembly today Monday, October 31, said the committee of the whole Assembly passed the bill after considering the amendment.

"The law has been in existence since 1963, but did not provide serious punishment for kidnappers, therefore, we have to amend it to suit the current situation," said Attah.

According to the lawmaker representing Fagge Constituency, any person found guilty of kidnapping would face life imprisonment without an option of fine while anyone found guilty of rape or forced labour will be sentenced to 15 years without an option of fine.

Speaking with newsmen after the passage of the bill, the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Salisu Riruwe, hailed the amendment as a welcome development.

"With the passage of this anti-kidnapping law, we are hoping that the rampant cases of kidnapping and abduction in some areas of the state will come to an end," Mr. Riruwe said.

Russia 2018: We're a big nation, We'll prepare sufficently and beat Algeria - Alex Iwobi boasts

Arsenal and Nigeria star Alex Iwobi has boasted that coach Gernot Rohr's tutored side will beat Algeria when the two sides battle for three points in the 2018 World Cup qualifier to take place in Uyo next month.

The striker who has been a beaming light for Arsenal and the Super Eagles since rejecting a chance to represent the Three Lions of England opened the scoring in Nigeria's 2-1 win over Zambia last Sunday in Ndola and says Nigeria have nothing to fear against an Algerian side boasting stars like Slimani and PFA player of the year Riyad Mahrez.

'Nigeria is a big football nation and we are mindful that we carry the expectations of the Nation on our shoulders. As individuals and as a team, we will always perform to the best of our abilities and will leave no stone unturned to ensure we qualify for the World Cup' Iwobi told SportingLife. The Algerians play a free flow and technical style of football but i am confident we shall prepare sufficiently and will beat them'
'We all struggled in the heat (in Ndola) , we trained in the sun in Nigria to acclimatize to the very hot conditions in Ngola. I had to track back to help the defense on a few occasions and this may have led to me slowing down in the second half. I am glad we held on and achieved a very good result which which we can build on.'

'I spoke with him (on Saturday) and he didn't accept the fact that he would come off the bench and, in the end, he didn't want to be in the 18,' coach Mauro Biello said. 'He decided not to play.'
The MLS club originally stated that back pain was the reason that the 38-year-old didn’t play but have now backtracked after rumours of a discord between Drogba and the manager surfaced in the media.

99% of Rice smuggled into the country not fit for consumption- CG Customs

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr Hameed Ali at a joint news conference on illegal rice importation into Nigeria Tuesday in Abuja, said 99% of rice smuggled through the land borders into the country are not fit for human consumption.
He said:

“Importation of rice into the country is not banned but restricted on the point of entry to seaports only. `We remain firm in our resolve to enforce the restriction of rice imports only to our seaports. “We have re-organised our anti-smuggling patrols to provide additional capability and bite,’’
He added that samples of some of the rice seized by Customs over a period of time were referred to NAFDAC to ascertain their condition. But that test results have certified that smuggled rice through the borders was unfit for human consumption and discouraged Nigerians from buying them.

He said:
“We have seen rice conveyed in open wooden canoes across our creeks and water ways with generous amount of dirty waters splashing on them. “We have seen some mixed with other grains bags to deceive customs; some are stuffed inside any available crevice and compartments of vehicles, including the engine area.
“The concealed rice is thereafter re-bagged half cooked and presented in our markets for sale as imported rice.
“Bags of rice meant for Nigerians’ consumption (are) being conveyed in coffins inside make shift ambulance vehicles. “Often time, importers in the borders have to wait for months for the green light from corrupt customs officials before they gamble their ways across the borders.
“Rice being a perishable product, lose valuable shelve life in non conductive strong conditions. “We have strong evidence linking some reputable importers to cases of re-bagging expired rice to prolong their shelve life,’’ he added.
Ali also said that those who promote economic subterfuge were seeking a re-introduction of quota system to import 1.5 million tonnes through the entry point “We will be waiting for them.”

Ali said that many state governments are investing in local production of rice and that the Federal Government, through the intervention by CBN and Bank of Industry, is also investing in the local production of rice within the country.

Ali said Kebbi State Government has so far harvested over 700,000 tonnes of rice from irrigation farming.

Hospital charges new mum $39.35 to hold her newborn baby

Reddit user posted a bill which has quickly gone viral on the web. Listed in the bill which was given to the new mother was $39.35 charge for holding her own baby after delivery in a recent labor and delivery service in the United States. The bill shows a charge for “skin to skin after C-section.” The Reddit user who posted it explained more in a few comments.

He wasn’t exactly mad about the charge, he said the hospital did a great job delivering his son. Instead, it more of spoke to the absurdity of American health care.
He said:
During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes too. We just noticed it in the bill today. The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife's neck/chest. Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us. Everyone involved in the process was great, and we had a positive experience. We just got a chuckle out of seeing that on the bill."
The image has been shared several times on social media.

Today is the 4th year death anniversary of Aluu 4 victims

Exactly today October 5th in 2012, Ugonna Obuzor, Toku Lloyd, Chiadika Biringa, and Tekena Elkanah, all students of the University of Port Harcourt were lynched after they were falsely accused of being thieves in Aluu, a community in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Three of them had escorted one of their friends to go settle a debt with someone who lived in the nearby village of Aluu. In the cause of settling the debt, a misunderstanding ensued which turned into a fight and the debtor started screaming, claiming that the boys were thieves.

The vigilante group (some of them pictured above in court) in the village surrounded the boys, stripped them naked, tortured them until they were almost unconscious. Then in the presence of a large crowd, the boys were dragged through mud, had concrete slabs dropped on their heads, car tyres filled with petrol wrapped around their necks and burnt to death. No single person has been sent to prison for the crime.

Although Tinubu's statement was harsh, we have no rift- Oyegun

Speaking with state house correspondents after his meeting with President Buhari at the state house yesterday, Oyegun said although the statement released by Tinubu calling for his resignation was a bit harsh, it doesn't change the fact that they both have worked together as far back as their activism with NADECO and other political bodies.
"All what me and Tinubu have is a difference of opinion. Yes it was expressed a bit harshly but that doesn't remove the basic fact that we have worked together. There is no rift. We have a difference of opinion. Yes we have difference of perception but in politics that is normal. Yes I agree that the nature of the statement was a bit harsh"he said

President Buhari needs to fumigate his cabinet' - Sen Shehu Sani

According to Sani, most of the members of President ‎Buhari's cabinet have not declared their assets as he has done. The Senator also faulted the commendation from Western government of President Buhari's government without returning looted funds stashed in their countries.
"The Commendation coming from western Governments for PMB administration makes us proud. But commendation should be backed with solid economic support. It makes no meaning to just continue to commend a captain of a sinking ship without appreciable support while he steer it painfully through storm and turbulence.Praising PMB and refusing to release looted funds stashed in foreign Banks makes no meaning"he said.
